CHAPTER NINE

Jenny couldn’t resist another peek at those eyes. She lifted one lid, holding her breath, afraid he was actually awake like the last time, watching her to see what she would do. But his other eye remained closed. She laid her head against his chest--to make sure he was breathing and his heart was still beating, of course. Not to see what it would feel like.

"This looks cozy," Heather drawled from the doorway. "Do we all get a turn?"

Jenny jerked upright. "Don’t be silly. I was just making sure he was still alive."

"Sure you were." Somehow Heather made the single syllable sound like three.

"Leave her alone, Heather." Marissa pushed past her and moved to the foot of the bed. "I swear, sometimes you could try God’s patience."

"Well, I wouldn’t mind a piece of that. Too bad he’s a Feeb. I’ve heard they’re as straight laced in bed as they are on the job." Heather tossed her hair and leaned against the door jam. She was posed for maximum effect. If Special Agent Dixon woke up in the next few minutes, she’d be the first thing he saw.

Jenny wanted to shove her back into the living room. "I wouldn’t put too much stock in that old wives’ tale. Sometimes the ones who are most reserved in public are the wildest in the bedroom."

Heather raised an eyebrow. "And you would know this how?

"Stop it, both of you." Marissa moved around to the head of the bed and leaned over. "Why is he still out? You probably hit him too hard."

"I didn’t mean to. I just didn’t want that gun stuck in my face again. Scared the shit outta me." What if she’d done permanent damage? She’d never see daylight again once the FBI caught up with her. God, please let him wake up! "Watch him for a minute while I go get a wet rag to wash his face. Maybe that will wake him up."

Heather grinned as Jenny slipped through the door. "My pleasure."

Jenny shook her head and went into the kitchen to get a rag. She found one in the drawer by the sink and wet it with cold water she found in the refrigerator. When she returned to the bedroom, she found Heather leaning over the bed, her breasts threatening to spill out of her low cut T-shirt.

She straightened when Jenny cleared her throat. "I think he’s starting to wake up," she said as she backed away when Jenny forced herself into the now overcrowded spot.

"Good." Jenny slapped the cold rag on the agent’s head and his body jerked in response. "Y’all go find something to do. I need to talk to this idiot for a minute."

They left and Jenny picked up the rag, using it to wash Dixon’s face and neck. She folded it and placed it under his head, over the alarmingly large lump that had formed.

Dixon groaned and opened first one eye, then the other. He tried to move his hand, tugging when he found it restrained.
